Por eso los niños (de 10 a 12 años) del colegio de A Guía en Meira (Moaña) se quedaron atónitos el día antes de las vacaciones. Y todo, porque Olga González su profesora ganó el reto que un mes antes el jugador de Los Ángeles Lackers había propuesto en su cuenta de Facebook.
«Ví la propuesta del reto y le escribí proponiéndole que le hablase a los niños de la importancia de hablar inglés», relataba en la jornada de ayer la docente, que aún no acaba de creerse la elección de Pau. «Fuimos elegidos entre todo el mundo. Era un reto a nivel mundial». (LEER TODO)

La ventaja que tienen ahora quienes deseen aprender idiomas es que el inglés está presente en la vida diaria. Si hace treinta años lo máximo que podía escuchar alguien en inglés eran las canciones de moda -y sin posibilidad de saber qué decían-, ahora hay todo un mundo de posibilidades gracias a Internet. «Un idioma se aprende escuchando -incide Nuria Calvo- no somos peores que otros europeos, solo tenemos menos entrenamiento». 

La otra pieza fundamental para generalizar el conocimiento de inglés es que tenga más categoría educativa. No solo por las horas -unos diez mil niños gallegos estudian una asignatura no lingüística en este idioma- sino por la exigencia. Desde Apiga se insiste en que es necesario que la selectividad -o la reválida, cualquier prueba final de bachillerato- incluya un examen oral de la lengua de Shakespeare para fomentar su práctica en clase. También se necesitan modernizar algunos métodos: hay institutos en los que se sigue estudiando la fonética como disciplina lingüística, un sistema propio de hace décadas que no se traduce en más charla entre los estudiantes.

En este sentido, las nuevas generaciones son mucho más abiertas que los estudiantes de hace décadas. En una escuela de idiomas antes había que cazar al voluntario que quisiese hablar en clase, y hoy por hoy es algo mucho más habitual. Nuria Calvo, vicedirectora de la Escola Oficial de Idiomas en A Coruña, explica que la forma de enseñanza ha variado mucho en la última década y todo gracias a las nuevas tecnologías: «Todas las aulas tienen ordenadores individuales con audio y acceso a Internet».

Aprender otra lengua tiene mucho de política, en el sentido de que depende de «la importancia que le da una sociedad a los idiomas», tal y como explica Paula Botas, profesora de inglés y miembro de la Asociación de Profesores de Inglés de Galicia (Apiga). Botas lo resume en un ejemplo muy cercano: «El nivel de inglés en Portugal es muy alto porque se valora mucho ese idioma. Es una cuestión cultural, y se refuerza con cosas como la ausencia de doblaje» en cine y televisión. Está claro que repetir es la clave para aprender. 

Lo hacen los niños pequeños con su lengua materna y quienes pretenden conocer otra. Al principio solo se entiende y después uno se suelta a hablar. Eso lo sabe bien Francisco, profesor de Educación Física en inglés en ESO y bachillerato en el colegio plurilingüe Divina Pastora de Ourense: «Al principio, los alumnos me entienden, pero es muy difícil que me hablen. Solo se atreven a hablar cuando tienen que ir al baño o se les olvida algo, pero me doy cuenta de que al pasar los cursos es cuando se sueltan».

PREPARARSE PARA TRABAJAR FUERA

La crisis económica ha abierto la puerta a la emigración de los españoles, pero a diferencia de lo ocurrido hace cincuenta años, los que se marchan son personas con formación avanzada, sobre todo técnica. Pero otra cosa son los idiomas. ¿Están los españoles, los gallegos, preparados en ese sentido para trabajar fuera?

Ayudar a todo el mundo a traducir textos y aprender idiomas gratis en Internet es la proposición del emprendedor y matemático guatemalteco Luis von Ahn, que lanzó oficialmente esta semana duolingo.com. 
Von Ahn, quien a sus 33 años ha sido considerado una de las 50 personas más influyentes en el mundo de la tecnología, presentó la versión beta de prueba el pasado año pero "Duolingo ya está en marcha", según dijo.  
Según indicó, medio millón de personas en todo el mundo ya se han sumado a esta iniciativa, que ha sido apoyada por el actor Ashton Kutcher, exmarido de Demi Moore, que ha mostrado su interés en el trabajo de Von Ahn en su cuenta de Twitter. 

El sistema evalúa a los estudiantes por niveles desde cero y van aprendiendo de forma intuitiva con actividades, ejercicios para escuchar y hablar utilizando la plataforma digital. 

Lo que queremos es ayudar a traducir textos de internet a todos los idiomas del mundo, ya que según dijo más del 50% de los contenidos está en inglés y "si la gente no sabe no pueden entender el contenido".

EL INGLES COMO PARADIGMA

Si hay una asignatura que expresa el fracaso educativo es el inglés. Los alumnos salen de la enseñanza media con casi doce cursos de inglés, pero muchos son incapaces de mantener una conversación coherente en la lengua de Bob Dylan. Aquellos encuestados que imparten clases donde el nivel de inglés tiene relevancia lamentan las dificultades con que se encuentran muchos alumnos, aunque también destacan el avance que se ha ido produciendo en los últimos años. 

En 1995, la nota media de selectividad en inglés fue de 4,21 en junio y de 3,31 en septiembre. Quince años después, los aspirantes merecieron un 6,13 y un 4,71, respectivamente. «El problema es que se enseña mucha teoría, pero el caso es que, al final del proceso, el alumno no sabe hablar y no entiende lo que le dicen en inglés», expresa un profesor del campus de Ourense. Para Andrés Faíña, el caso del inglés es paradigmático: «Vale para otras asignaturas. Te piden saber todo sobre Cervantes, pero rara vez se hace una lectura reflexiva de un pasaje del Quijote».

ESPAÑA DEBE MEJORAR SU INGLÉS

España presenta unos datos poco entusiastas en el dominio del inglés ya que sólo un 27 % de los jóvenes encuestados es competente. No ocurre lo mismo con el francés, donde el porcentaje sube al 28 %. En el estudio se añaden algunas recomendaciones: "España debe mejorar sus resultados con el inglés, sobre todo, en la comprensión oral". 

No obstante, con el francés España obtiene los mejores resultados entre los países encuestados incluso superando en algunas habilidades a países cuya primera lengua extranjera es dicho idioma. Malta y Suecia, por su parte, encabezan la lista de países que mejor hablan una lengua extranjera (82 % inglés) frente al 9 % de Inglaterra, donde aprenden francés, o al 14 % de Francia, donde estudian inglés. GENDER NOUNS - 03

The Noun-Gender tells us about the sex of the noun. In Grammar-Nouns, there are FOUR GENDERS. 


 1. Masculine gender: A noun is said to be in the Masculine gender if it refers to a male character or member of a species. Man, lion, hero, boy, king, horse and actor are nouns of masculine gender. 
Example: • A boy is playing in the play-ground. 
• Hero of the movie is not a native of this country. 
In these sentences the words "boy" and "hero" are masculine-gender nouns. 


 2. Feminine gender: A noun is said to be in the feminine gender if it refers to a female member of a species. Woman, lioness, heroine, girl, mare, niece, empress, cow and actress are few of the feminine-gender nouns that we use. 
Example: • A girl is playing in the play-ground. 
• Heroine of the movie is not a native of this country. 
In these sentences the words "girl" and "heroine" are feminine-gender nouns.
3. Common gender: A noun is said to be in Common gender if it refers to a member of species which can be a male or a female. Child, student, friend, applicant, candidate, servant, member, parliamentarian and leader are few of the common-gender nouns. 
Example: • A child is playing in the play-ground. 
• A Parliamentarian should have command over his language. 
In these sentences the words, "child" and "parliamentarian" are nouns of common gender.


 4. Neuter gender: A noun is said to be in the neuter gender if it refers to a member of a species which is neither a male nor a female. 
Normally nouns referring to lifeless objects are in neuter nouns.
Chair, table, tree, star, mountain, street, book, car, school, paper, pencil and computer are few of the neuter nouns which we use regularly.

The Rise and Fall of the Dollar

Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes Berkeley economic historian Barry Eichengreen for a discussion of his new book, Exorbitant Privilege. Outlining the history of the dollar's role in the international monetary system, Eichengreen begins with the function and characteristics of a reserve currency. The conversation then moves to an analysis of the institutional prerequisites for the rise of the dollar as an international currency. After describing the dollar's rise and sterling's fall, Eichengreen focuses on the factors that accounted for the dollar's preeminence after World War II. 

Throughout the conversation, he touches on the personalities who forged America's dominant role. He then chronicles the slow erosion of the dollar as other centers of economic power emerged. The discussion moves on to examine the causes and consequences of the 2008 economic collapse. In light of the fiscal crisis confronting the United States today, Eichengreen speculates on the future of the dollar and on the challenges posed by the euro and the yuan. He concludes with reflections on the role of history in explicating policy choices.

SINGULAR & PLURAL NOUNS 02

Singular Noun Definition: When a noun means one only, it is said to be singular. Examples: boy, girl, book, church, box 


Plural Noun Definition: When a noun means more than one, it is said to be plural. Examples: boys, girls, books, churches 


Rule #1 The plural of nouns is usually formed by adding s to a singular noun. Example: lamp, lamps; cat, cats; fork, forks; flower, flowers; pen, pens 


Rule #2 Nouns ending in s, z, x, sh, and ch form the plural by adding es. Example: moss, mosses buzz, buzzes box, boxes dish, dishes church, churches
Special Note : If you add s to such nouns as fox, bush, and bench, you will find that you cannot pronounce them without making an additional syllable. This is why such nouns form the plural by adding es. 


Rule #3 Nouns ending in y preceded by a consonant is formed into a plural by changing y to ies. Examples: lady, ladies; city, cities; army, armies 


Rule #4 Nouns ending in y preceded by a vowel form their plurals by adding s. Example: boy, boys; day, days 


Rule #5 Most nouns ending in o preceded by a consonant is formed into a plural by adding es. Example: hero; heroes; grotto, grottoes 


Rule #6 Some nouns ending in f or fe are made plural by changing f or fe to ves. Example: beef, beeves; wife, wives
