Why input based learning, or passive learning is so useful. Answers to some of the comments to my video on Listening and Speaking. I forgot to mention the biggest advantage of input based learning. It enables you to be independent.

WORD FREQUENCY GRADED READERS

To me the major task in language learning is the acquisition of vocabulary. If this is done through massive listening and reading, it will naturally bring with it a constantly improving familiarity with the language, making it easier and easier to understand grammar explanations, and eventually making it possible to learn to express oneself in writing or orally. Vocabulary is the key, in my view. The more vocabulary we learn, the more we can acquire. In vocabulary, the rich get richer and the poor stay poor.

How many words do we need to know in order to be fluent in a language? 
Lots. But it does depend on your goals.

EFFORTLESS LANGUAGE LEARNING

I am not convinced that hard work and deliberate learning is more effective than taking the easy way.

MAKING PROGRESS

How do we know that we are making progress in our language studies? It so often seems that we are at a standstill. My own benchmark is the number of words that I know. If I see the number increase, I know that I am improving, even if it does not show all the time.

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE

IN LANGUAGE LEARNING
People stay with the beginner book or course too long. They think they have to stay with it until they understand it or can remember everything. Forget it. Believe me you will. You will need to keep on going back to the beginner book. In the meantime, get into interesting authentic content. Do it as soon as possible, even if you don't understand it very well. Don't even use graded readers.
